Custom Fly Fishing Rod Building

Why go with a custom fly fishing rod from True West?

A fly rod is made up of much more than just the fly rod blanks, or the graphite structure of the rod.  The components that are used to build a fly fishing rod are just as important, and affect performance as much as the blanks that it is built on. That is why True West uses only the highest quality components for our fly fishing rod building, we refuse to cut corners when it comes to the material we select to build your fly rod.

When you buy a typical rod from a fly shop or directly from the company, you are getting a stock rod that is built for the theoretical average person. The rods are built using lower quality components (guides, real seats, and cork grips), and all cast and look the same.

At True West we take the same fly rod blanks that are used by Sage, Winston, Orvis, etc., and build it using high quality components that will not only make the rod perform better but look like a work of art. Each rod is meticulously hand built, with remarkable attention to every detail. All this adds up to a fly fishing rod that fishes and looks like something you will be proud to own.

How does the process work?

With True West, no rods are pre made, they are designed specifically for the customer. You call or email us and we will help you choose a fly rod blank that will best fit your casting style, and the waters you will most often be fishing. We then build the rod to your specifications, and also design it so that it is unique and a one of a kind.

Finally, we finish it all off by putting your name, nickname, or any personalized phrase on the rod.

Is it expensive?

When you buy a rod from a fly shop, or order one from a typical website there is always a large amount of mark-up that you are paying for. That being the case we can build a higher quality, custom rod for a comparable price to a rod you would buy stock.

What if I am unsure of what fly rod I would like to have custom built for me?

Our team of experienced fly fisherman can help you choose a rod that will best fit the water you like to fish and your fishing style.

How is a True West built Rod different than a rod I would buy in a fly shop.

We use the same blanks that are being sold in the fly shop such as Sage, Winston, Orvis, etc., but we build your rod with much better components. The performance of a fly rod is determined by much more than just the blank it is built upon.  We use only the highest quality guides, real seats and cork handles in constructing your rod, which adds up to a rod that performs better. On top of all of this is our custom flare that makes your rod look amazing as well, and sets it apart from all the others out there.

What is the warranty on a True West Rod?

We cover our workmanship for the life of the rod. If you break a section of your rod the manufacturer of the blank will replace that section and we will rebuild it for you to match the rest of the rod. You only have to cover the shipping costs.

Can I choose the color of my rod?

The color of the blank is determined by what specific brand and model of blank you choose. However,  if you like you can choose the color of handle, real seat, and thread that is used to build your rod.

Why do you not offer some of the other popular brands such as G. Loomis and Scott?

The blanks of these companies are not available to rod builders, so we are unable to build you these rods. There are a few G. Loomis blanks that can be found out there, but they are becoming very hare to come by.
